Bahrain, Arab island sheikdom in the Persian Gulf, off the Arabian Peninsula.
It has an area of 250 square miles (650 sq km). The capital is Manama.
A British protectorate after 1861, it has been an important petroleum producer since 1934, and is now an independent State no longer relying on British protection since troop withdrawal in 1971.
Its refinery also processes crude oil from the nearby Saudi Arabian fields. Bahrain is rich in archaeological remains.
