Most of the population, almost entirely Chinese, is concentrated in the urban complex of Victoria and Kowloon, on both sides of Hong Kong harbour.

The island passed to Britain in 1841, with Kowloon added in 1860, and the New Territories were leased in 1898 for 99 years. After 1997, Hong Kong passed to China.

Since the mid-19th century, Hong Kong has become one of the leading commercial centres of South-East Asia, containing the headquarters of large banks and corporations. Its deep-water port has traditionally handled a large part of the transit trade with China.

Its airport is one of the main international air centres in Asia. Since the coming of the Communist government in China, Hong Kong and its railway to Canton have been the only gateway to the Chinese mainland from the West.
