Textile mills dominate the industrial scene, but machinery and chemicals are gaining steadily in importance. Barcelona exports cloth, wine, cork and fruit, and imports coal and cotton for its manufacturing plants.

The city is more than 2,000 years old and has been occupied by the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors and the Franks under Charlemagne. After the 12th century it flourished as the capital of the Kings of Aragon. The population of Barcelona has frequently resisted the rule of the Madrid government.

Catalan (the language of the region known in history as Catalonia) is widely spoken; it is akin to Provençal, spoken in south-eastern France. Water power is now much utilised in the mountains inland.
