Marrakesh is the principal inland city of southern Morocco. The narrow, crooked streets of the old part of this city are full of people and domestic animals. In the colourful bazaar, a tremendous variety of merchandise is on display.

Most of the trading takes place in front of the shops. The city rarely has any rain, though the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas are always on the horizon.
The place was founded in 1062, and a 12th-century mosque towers over Marrakesh. The Arab and Berber inhabitants have made fine leather goods and carpets for generations. The surrounding land is a fertile oasis.
