Sydney is Australia's largest city, leading seaport of Australia and capital of New South Wales, the most populous state of the Commonwealth.

Sydney Harbour, a naturally sheltered bay divided into numerous coves, has the country's largest shipyards, a naval base, miles of docks, and huge grain silos and warehouses. Wool, wheat, flour, iron and steel are the leading exports; most of the trade is carried on with the island of Japan.
Sydney Harbour Bridge, with an arch span of 1,650 feet (503 metres) and under which large ships can pass, is the city's chief landmark; it leads to the northern suburbs where most people live in detached houses. Sydney's first inhabitants were members of a prison colony established in 1788.
