Mecca is the birthplace of Mohammed and the site of the Kaaba, foremost shrine of the Moslem pilgrimage.
The Kaaba is a cube-shaped building, in the court of the Great Mosque, which contains the sacred black stone. Pilgrims kiss the stone and walk seven times around the Kaaba itself as part of their devotions. About hundred thousands Moslems from all over the world visit Mecca yearly in the pilgrimage, known as the hadj. Its harbour is Djidda, the largest port of Saudi Arabia.
