The city is dominated by Hradcany Hill, on the left bank, surmounted by a 1,000 year-old castle and St Vitus' Cathedral (1344). The Charles Bridge, one of eleven across the Vltava, leads to the Old Town, with tall, narrow, gabled houses built by German colonists in the 13th century.

The New Town, the business district, adjoining the Old Town on the south, dates from the 14th century, when medieval Prague was at the height of its prosperity. Prague, a treasure house of baroque architecture, has been called the "Golden city of a hundred spires".

Engineering industries in outlying suburbs produce cars, rolling stock, aeroplanes, machine tools and heavy machinery. Among the city's traditional products are gloves, glass and smoked meats.

An old political centre of Bohemia, Prague was the second city of Europe, after Paris, during the 14th century. It declined in the 15th century, at the time of the Hussite wars between the Czechs and Germans.
