Los Angeles: This booming metropolis of southern California is now the second largest city in the United States, with a thriving man made harbour on the Pacific Ocean.
Founded by Spanish missionaries in 1781, Los Angeles owes its meteoric rise to the discovery of oil in the 1890s, the growth of the film industry at Hollywood in the 20th century, and the growing importance of the aircraft industry since 1940, which came to the region because of its all-the-year-round sunny and mild weather.
