Los Angeles (USA)Los Angeles: This booming metropolis of southern California is now the second largest city in the United States, with a thriving man made harbour on the Pacific Ocean.

Founded by Spanish missionaries in 1781, Los Angeles owes its meteoric rise to the discovery of oil in the 1890s, the growth of the film industry at Hollywood in the 20th century, and the growing importance of the aircraft industry since 1940, which came to the region because of its all-the-year-round sunny and mild weather.

Additional industries drawn to this sprawling urban centre are: steel-milling, oil-refining, manufacturing of rubber goods, and food processing, especially citrus fruits, grown in the Los Angeles basin.

Los Angeles is one of the world's most car-dominated city; limited-access highways lead to the outlying communities, which extend 30 miles (48 km) inland from the shore and 50 miles (80 km) in a north- south direction.

With a rainfall of only 15 inches (375 mm) per year, mostly in the winter months, Los Angeles has had to look for its water supply to the distant Sierra Nevada mountains and the Colorado River, and hundreds of miles of aqueducts have been built to meet the growing needs of millions of people in the metropolitan area.
