With its universities, scientific institutes, museums, libraries and famous theatres, Berlin was the foremost educational and artistic centre of Germany and one of the leading cities in Europe, even though it is not an ancient foundation. It was also important in the manufacture of garments and electrical goods, and in the printing and publishing industries.
From 1949 till 1990, the city's position had declined because of the partition of Germany — Berlin was divided into two sector by "Berlin Wall" - also known as "The Shame Wall" after 90's. West Berlin was considered part of West Germany, from which it is separated by 70 miles (110 km) of East German territory. East Berlin was the capital of German Democratic Republic.
Allied bombings during World War II destroyed 30 per cent of the city and up to 60 per cent of its central business district. Many famous buildings and monuments, such as the Brandenburg Gate, have been rebuilt or repaired. Joint four-nation rule of the city (established after the war by Britain, France, the Soviet Union and the U.S.A.) ceased in 1948, and Berlin had been divided into two parts — East and West — each separately administered.
Despite its great extent, Berlin is not completely urban, for large parks and broad streets beautify the city — among them the famous Kurfürstendamm, the Unter den Linden, Friedrichstrasse, Karl Marx Allee and others.
