Long known for its beer and its wooden handicrafts, Munich also has specialised industries producing machinery, precision tools and instruments. Founded in the 12th century as a salt- trading centre, Munich has been the capital of Bavaria for over 700 years.

Due to the interest and good taste of its rulers, the city grew into a cultural centre. It is the home of Germany's largest university, numerous museums, art galleries and theatres.

In the 20th century, however, Munich witnessed the birth of the National Socialist movement and Hitler's rise to power. In World War II, many of the city's finest buildings were damaged by Allied air raids; among the casualties were the beautiful Liebfrauenkirche, 1468-88 (the Church of Our Lady), and the Pinakothek, whose invaluable art collection was fortunately preserved.
