Naples is the principal seaport of southern Italy, situated on a beautiful bay of the Mediterranean Sea within view of cone-shaped Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the European mainland.
Naples exports such typical products of Italy as macaroni, olive oil, fruit and cheese, as well as gloves and textiles. Famous for the gaiety of its songs and festivals, Naples is a noisy city, and nowhere in Europe is street life more crowded or more confused, especially in the narrow lanes that lead to the tiers of whitewashed, flat-roofed houses stacked up above the bay.
