Naples exports such typical products of Italy as macaroni, olive oil, fruit and cheese, as well as gloves and textiles. Famous for the gaiety of its songs and festivals, Naples is a noisy city, and nowhere in Europe is street life more crowded or more confused, especially in the narrow lanes that lead to the tiers of whitewashed, flat-roofed houses stacked up above the bay.

Naples has a long and checkered history that began in 326 B.C. with the Roman occupation of an ancient Greek colony on this site. In 1282, Naples became the capital of a kingdom of the same name, over which France, Spain and Austria fought in later years. In 1816, Naples and Sicily were merged into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies which, in turn, was incorporated into the newly created independent Italy in 1860.

The port of Naples suffered severe damage in World War II. Naples has a university founded in 1224, and a famous vulcanological institute. There are many modern industries, including iron, textiles and foodstuffs.
