Havana is the largest city of the West Indies and the cultural hub of this Spanish-speaking island. Sugar, tobacco (Havana cigars especially) and tropical fruits (pineapples, pimentos, tomatoes) are exported. Tourists come to this picturesque Spanish-colonial city, especially in winter, when the climate is at its best and beach- and night-life at their most active.

Morro Castle, built in 1590, guards the entrance to the harbour. The old section has many fine examples of Spanish architecture. Founded in 1519, Havana has served as a gateway to the Spanish part of the New World since the middle of the 16th century. In 1898, the American battleship Maine was blown up in Havana harbour, an event which led to the Spanish-American War.
