The territory, south of Canton, consists of the town of Macao (where most of the Chinese population are located) and of a few small offshore islands. Macao is a fishing and tourism centre, and there is some transit trade with China. Since the mid-19th century, it has been eclipsed by the rise of Hong Kong, 40 miles (65 km) to the east.
