Macau (China)

 

...with an area of six square miles (16 sq km) and a population over 500,000. Macau founded by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. It had been administered by them until 1999, now, it is one of the two special administrative regions, like Hong Kong.

 

 

The territory, south of Canton, consists of the town of Macao (where most of the Chinese population are located) and of a few small offshore islands. Macao is a fishing and tourism centre, and there is some transit trade with China. Since the mid-19th century, it has been eclipsed by the rise of Hong Kong, 40 miles (65 km) to the east.
