Addis Ababa has also known as "the capital of Africa", due to its political and historical importance for the continent. There are people from as many as 80 nationalities, speaking 80 languages and there are Christian, Muslim, Jewish and some other religious communities.

The palace of the former emperors stands above all. Mingled in the streets are modern motorcars and herds of sheep, city folk in Western clothing and poor villagers carrying produce to market. A railway connects Addis Ababa with the port of Djibouti 500 miles (800 km) away on the Bay of Aden.
