It is one of the most attractive cities of Europe, with a wealth of old buildings and a picturesque central core. It is strategically situated on The Sound, a narrow stretch of water joining the Baltic with the Kattegat.

It is partly a free port and has large shipyards, oil refineries and machine shops on the island of Amager to the south-east, on which the airport is situated.

The city is well-known for its porcelain, glassware, furniture, jewellery, silverware and brewing industries. Limited within its defensive walls until 1864, Copenhagen has now spread over the country to the west, and has large parks and high-class residential quarters to the north. Many of the buildings in central Copenhagen are splendid examples of Renaissance architecture: the Stock Exchange, Regensen — the students' hostel — and many of the Royal Palaces, most instigated by Christian IV.

It is extremely popular with tourists, two main attractions being the Tivoli Gardens — an amusement park of great enchantment — and Stroget, a winding street in the centre of the city between the Town Hall and the harbour, now closed to traffic and forming a shopping precinct.
