Zurich is the largest city (population 1 million) of Switzerland, and its financial and publishing centre with far-flung banking and trade connections.
Altough Bern is political capital of Switzerland, Zurich is "the cultural an financial capital". Textiles, paper, chocolate and radios are among the many products of the city's factories.
As the gateway to the Alpine reaches of the upper Rhine valley, Zurich is also a major tourist resort. It lies at the north end of the Lake of Zurich (25 miles or 40 km long), whose southern shores are fringed by the foothills of the Alps.
